In the world of animation, not only the visuals play a central role – sound design is equally important for creating emotions and supporting the narrative. We recently developed the sound design for a stunning animated video created by DoP & UE artist Arthur Baum using Unreal Engine 5.4 and Blender 4.1 . This blog post provides insights into the project, the workflow, and the final result.

The project: Visual and acoustic harmony

The animation video was developed by Arthur Baum , who utilized the new MoGraph tools in Unreal Engine 5.4 . Cloners and effectors were used to create a visually captivating world, which was further refined through simulations in Blender 4.1 . The sound designer 's task was to add sound to the movements of the visual elements and develop a suitable musical accompaniment.

The goal was to underline the intense visual language of the video with powerful and precise sound effects in order to immerse the viewer deeply into the world of the video.

The workflow: From concept to implementation

1. Analysis and concept development:

Initially, the video was analyzed in detail to capture its atmosphere and visual focal points. This included identifying scenes that required dramatic sound accents or subtle noises. This analysis led to the development of a comprehensive sound design concept that optimally supports the visual narrative.

2. Selection and creation of sounds:

Based on the concept, appropriate sound elements were selected and partially recreated. The focus was on finding sounds that perfectly matched the respective scenes in both quality and impact. A mix of self-created sounds and licensed sound materials was used.

3. Synchronization and fine-tuning:

The next step involved precisely synchronizing the sound effects with the image sequences. Precise coordination was necessary to ensure that the sounds perfectly complemented the movements and dynamics of the animations. This fine-tuning was carried out to the millisecond to ensure perfect harmony between image and sound.

4. Mixing and mastering:

The final process consisted of mixing and mastering the sound design. This ensured that all sound components were well balanced and that the overall composition sounded optimal on both small and large playback systems. Mastering ensured that the final sound would be impressive across all platforms and devices.

The result: an immersive experience

The finished animated video is an example of how image and sound can merge into a powerful unity. The precise and dynamic sound effects enhance the visual impressions and create an intense, immersive experience for the viewer. The combination of modern animation techniques with a tailor-made sound design takes the video to a new level.

Conclusion: The influence of sound design on the success of animation projects

This project highlights the essential role of sound design in animated videos . Thoughtful sound design not only complements the visual elements, but also enhances them and brings out the emotional impact of the content. For future animation projects, professional sound design offers an opportunity to sonically expand and intensify the visual narrative.

The video gained international attention and was shown at various film festivals, such as the Human Lab exhibition in Berlin and the UNREAL FEST 2024 in Tokyo:

Furthermore, Unreal Engine itself featured the video on its YouTube channel:
